Buffaloed Out – A quest for sweet and savory wing sauce
It was the day before Thanksgiving; Jaren and I went on a spontaneous run to acquire a pristine, billiard size, air hockey table for my new refinished basement. The deals you find on craigslist, nothing short of amazing…
However, the seller greatly underestimated the weight and size of this thing. “Ohhh, it’s about 100 to 150 pounds” yea, ok dude, more like 300 pounds..
After we safely made it back and played a couple of games of air hockey, a much-needed dinner out to say thank you, was in order. Being the WingMen and all, we figured, why not Buffalo Wild Wings?
BWW ‘Blazin’ Sauce
“This tastes like throw up, mixed with hot pepper extract”
– Jaren Havell
We like spicy foods, especially wings. But, there has to be some kind of flavor. Something worth the burn. Blazin, known as the BWW Hot ‘Sauce’ challenge was spicy and TERRIBLE in flavor.
Estimates online rate this sauce somewhere around 300,000 Scoville units which.. is pretty hot. However, anyone can take a bottle of Franks Redhot and pour in some Satan’s Blood pepper extract and call it sauce.
Forget the Spice
The next day being thanksgiving, Jaren and I planned on hanging out after Turkey Day family gatherings and making some wings. After our encounter with ‘Blazin’ the night before, we wanted something different. Which got me thinking..
A few weeks earlier I was watching a BBQ cooking program (don’t recall the name) referencing some of the best sauces are simple and have the fewest ingredients. In this particular episode, the grill master was making a rib sauce with Honey and Sriracha. I couldn’t help think, this would be outstanding on wings!
And.. Spicy Honey Sriracha was born
Of course, I couldn’t just take the sauce at face value. I wanted to add a few additional ingredients to really make it pop.
I started by sautéing some garlic in butter, add in equal parts of honey and sriracha till the sweet and heat seemed just right, and finished with a squeeze of lime juice to balance the strong sweet taste of the honey.
Folks.. we have a winner. This sauce is delicious! Jaren and I both agreed, we could eat these all day long. They’re not too hot (Depending on how your taste buds react to sriracha; adjust accordingly) and the lime juice adds a refreshing flavor. We strongly suggest you try these! Find the recipe below
